FEEDING DIRECTIONS FOR RBO GOLD

General Feeding Directions

  • Introduce oil gradually.
  • Split into two or more feedings.
  • Shake well before feeding.
  • Store in a clean, dry and cool environment.

RBO Gold can be beneficially incorporated into the diet of most classes of horses. The amount incorporated depends on the classification (ie: maintenance, breeding, growing, working) and the desired result.

Most uses fall into the following categories:

  1. Coat Enhancement: Top-dress on feed at a rate of 2-6 ounces per day.

  2. Increase Body Condition: Either top-dress on grain without decreasing grain or substitute for part of the grain ration depending on amount of increased calories desired. Start at a low amount, (2-3 ounces) and build up slowly to desired amount. A maximum amount of RBO Gold used for this purpose would be .7 pounds or 1.4 cups. After that level a small decrease in fiber digestibility may be experienced. Horses will differ in their acceptance of high fat rations. If substituting for grain, keep in mind for each increment of energy from grain, fat will provide 2.25 as many calories.

  3. Reducing Non-Structural Carbohydrates in the Ration: For many horses it may be desirable to minimize the level of starches and sugars in the ration. This group includes, but is not limited to horses prone to Laminitis, Cushing’s, Tying-up syndromes or horses with compromised carbohydrate metabolism. For these horses the amount of RBO Gold used depends on activity level, presence and severity of symptoms and energy content of other feeds. Start with 2-3 ounces and slowly increase to a maximum of 1.4 cups. Only feed maximum level if the horse’s energy requirement warrant’s it.

  4. Performance Enhancement: Adaption to fat supplementation may result in the improvement of athletic performance. The reasons for this are a change in muscle metabolism, decreased metabolic heat and decreased bowel ballast. Metabolic adaption has been observed as early as 3 weeks with full adaption around 12 weeks. Start with a low amount of oil (2-3 ounces) and work up to 1.5 to 2.0 cups per day. To avoid excess body weight the appropriate energy level should be fed for the intensity of exercise. Horses undergoing intense aerobic work (endurance, three-day, heavy ranch work) generally respond better than horses in anaerobic work. (Sprinting, barrel racing).

  5. Therapeutic/Special Needs: Dietary management for horses with RER or PSSM revolve around removing non-fiber carbohydrates from the ration and incorporating regular exercise. When forage alone does not meet the horses energy needs, the extra calories should come from fat. Some researchers report best results in controlling symptoms at 20% of the digestible energy coming from fat while others get good result at 10-15%. It is recommended to work closely with your nutritionist or vet to determine the appropriate level for your horse.
